David Berman
was an American musician, singer, poet and cartoonist
best known for his work with indie-rock band
the
Silver Jews
,
which included Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich, and Cassie Marrett Berman. The band primarily existed as a recording project for most of its existence, touring irregularly the majority of their dates coming from 2005 until 2009.
Their full-length albums that Berman wrote and recorded include:
Starlite Walker, The Natural Bridge, American Water, Bright Flight, Tanglewood Numbers
, and
Lookout Mountain Lookout Sea
. His songs include:
Trains Across the Sea, Random Rules, Punks in the Beerlight, I'm Getting Back into Getting Back into You, San Francisco B.C., Strange VIctory Strange Defeeat, The WIld Kindness, How to Rent a Room, Pretty Eyes, Advice to a Graduate,
and others. He released two books:
Actual Air
(1999) and
The Portable February
(2009). In early 2019, he  returned to music under the new band name
Purple Mountains
, releasing a self-titled debut album i
n July 2019. He died on August 7, 2019.
