.  Rare World War II Manhattan Project service certificate awarded by the US War Department to Robert Oppenheimer’s personal assistant at Los Alamos, Inez Claire O’Brien, on the very day the US dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, August 6, 1945.

The certificate reads in full: “United States of America, War Department, Army Services Forces - Corps of Engineers, Manhattan District, This is to Certify that Inez C. O
’Brien University of California has participated in
work essential to the production of the Atomic Bomb, thereby contributing to the successful conclusion of World War II. This certificate is awarded in appreciation of effective service.”  The certificate was awarded to O’Brien to recognize her involvement on the Manhattan Project, one page, measures 11.5” by 8.5”, created in Washington, DC, contains the stamp signatures of Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, in overall fine condition, acquired directly from O’Brien’s estate, and
accompanied with photocopies of
correspondence from Oppenheimer to O’Brien and
O’Brien’s US Army discharge papers
